Everything MSP: If You Disappeared for Two Weeks, Would Your MSP Still Grow?
What happens to your MSP’s growth when the owner steps away?
That was the question at the center of a recent Everything MSP conversation featuring Pete Busam, founder of Equilibrium Consulting, titled “If You Disappeared for Two Weeks, Would Your MSP Still Grow?”
For many MSP owners, the answer can be uncomfortable.
Growth often depends heavily on the owner’s relationships, referrals, networking, sales conversations, and the occasional marketing push when there is time to focus on it. When the owner gets busy serving clients, managing employees, or simply takes some well-earned time away, business development can slow down.
But sustainable growth shouldn’t depend on one person constantly pushing it forward.
Building a Marketing Engine, Not a Collection of Activities
During the conversation, Pete discusses a challenge Equilibrium sees throughout the MSP community: marketing is often treated as a collection of individual activities rather than an ongoing business discipline.
A website gets redesigned. A few blogs get published. Someone starts posting on LinkedIn. An email campaign goes out. Then client work gets busy, and marketing moves further down the priority list.
The problem isn’t necessarily the individual tactics. It’s the lack of a connected system behind them.
Effective MSP marketing should continually build visibility, credibility, engagement, and opportunities—even when the owner isn’t personally driving every activity.
That means understanding who you want to reach, what matters to them, where they look for information, and what they need to see before they are comfortable starting a conversation.
It also means connecting the pieces: website content, organic search, AI search visibility, social media, email, thought leadership, public relations, marketing automation, sales enablement, and measurement.
The Two-Week Test
There’s a simple question MSP owners can ask themselves:
If I disappeared from the business for two weeks, would our marketing and business development continue moving forward?
Would prospects still discover the company?
Would content continue reaching the right audience?
Would leads continue being nurtured?
Would your team know which opportunities deserve attention?
Would your website continue helping buyers understand why they should choose you?
If most of that activity stops when the owner steps away, the business may have marketing activities—but it doesn’t yet have a repeatable marketing system.
That distinction becomes increasingly important as MSPs grow.
Creating Growth That Doesn’t Depend on the Owner
At Equilibrium Consulting, we believe MSP marketing should be part of the business’s operating rhythm.
That starts with the fundamentals: ideal client profile, buyer personas, buyer journey, messaging, visibility, authority, content, technology, sales alignment, and measurement.
From there, each marketing tactic has a purpose rather than simply filling a calendar.
The goal isn’t marketing for marketing’s sake.
It’s creating a disciplined, repeatable approach that builds trust over time and gives prospective clients multiple opportunities to discover, understand, and engage with your MSP.
Because ultimately, a growing MSP shouldn’t have to choose between serving today’s clients and building tomorrow’s pipeline.
